Did So deserve a scolding?
Interesting Japanese media reports on the Momo Edgewood blog about a run-in between Matsushima So and Johnny Kitagawa. According to the Sponichi Annex website, So told a press conference he was upset at first that Sexy Zone was only to have one concert, but happy they ended up with three. It sounds like Johnny told him to be glad they have any concerts and to put everything they can into each and every show...to which, the Annex website said, So "bit his lip and said 'I understand.'"

It seems to me that the Sexy Zone kids get pumped up with live-your-dreams, reach-for-the-stars pep talks, and Matsushima was just trying to live up to that. He could just as easily say, "we didn't want to disappoint any fans and we're so happy we got more chances to do our show." That probably would have been a better way to put it, but how carefully can you expect a 14-year-old to choose his words?

I guess that's the point. It's so important to say things the right way to reporters. You never want them to think you're getting a swelled head over your fame. Maybe Johnny could have passed the message more privately, but it sounds like he was alarmed by how So was coming off at the press conference. If it happened the way it was reported, this was an unusual moment to say the least.

I disagree with those of you saying "he's only fourteen, he couldn't have worded it better". At fourteen his vocabulary is more than sufficient to express this in a better way, and as much as we hate to admit it, this is a fourteen year old who has chosen (for whatever reason) to play in the big leagues. We may choose to be lenient on him because we are his fans, but the press will not do so - that is how they function. As a debuted idol, whatever his age may be at the time, it is his job to consider carefully what he says and does, and it is Johnny's to remind him when he can do better.

Sou is lovely, and I think he will be a great idol. But we mustn't forget that his job as a fourteen year old is no different to MatsuJun's as a twenty-eight year old. The only difference is that Arashi have made mistakes and been told off accordingly enough times that they have learned and improved.

The surprising thing to me about this whole story was that Johnny Kitagawa, the 80 year old company president who doesn't like the limelight, was there at the press conference and made a public statement at all. It shows how important Sexy Zone is to Johnny's Jimusho. Is anybody still thinking they're only a single debut act, and they'll soon go the way of Yuma w/B.I.Shadow? I think this shows expectations are as high for SZ as they were for Hey!Say!JUMP.
